Rule of Law and Governance

The Kenyan Constitution provides the presidency with vast executive powers. Accordingly, the executive has dominated Kenyan politics since independence. The ability of parliament to control the executive is very limited. Patronage and weak institutionalization of parties are major factors in accounting for this. The inability to control the government is also a result of the formation of the grand coalition. Roughly half of all Kenyan MPs occupy some form of power.

Role of media in conflict resolution and Peace building

The media is a double-edged sword. It can be a frightful weapon of violence when it propagates messages of intolerance or disinformation that manipulate public sentiment. Radio Mille Collines in Rwanda is one of the most appalling contemporary examples.
Using a blend of popular entertainment and proselytizing by announcers, the government-supported broadcasts demonized one group of people and built resentment and fear among the other group. The messages implanted and legitimized the belief that genocide was an appropriate self-defence initiative,
and hundreds of thousands of people were slaughtered in that country. But there is another aspect to the media. It can be an instrument of conflict resolution, when the information it presents is reliable, respects human rights, and represents diverse views. It’s the kind of media that upholds accountability and exposes malfeasance. It’s the kind of media that enables a society to make well-informed choices, which is the precursor of democratic governance. It is a media that reduces conflict and fosters human security.

How Should Kenya Confront the Past? (Truth Justice and Reconciliation Committee)
The need for a TJRC to inquire into historical injustices, systemic human rights violations, economic crimes, and the illegal or irregular acquisition of land by previous governments was first acknowledged by the incoming National Rainbow Coalition government in 2003. The government appointed a Task Force on the Establishment of a TJRC, chaired by Professor Makau Mutua. The task force recommended the creation of a TJRC before June 2004, with a specific mandate, powers, and functions. However, its recommendations were ignored by the government.

Conflict in Great Lakes Region-How is it linked with Land and migration?
Africa’s Great Lakes region has in recent years experienced political strife, armed conflict and population displacements with severe humanitarian consequences. While these events have clearly revolved around political struggles for the control of the state, recent research has pointed to the significance of access to renewable resources as structural causes and sustaining factors in struggles for power in the region. Contested rights to land and natural resources are significant particularly in light of land scarcity in many areas and the frequency of population movements.
