Key activities :

AMANI Burundi and AMANI Rwanda joint missions

AMANI Burundi and AMANI Rwanda in collaboration with United Nations High Commission for Refugees (UNHCR) conducted jointly a two-day confidence building mission respectively to refugees’ camps in Rwanda from 26 to 29 October 2006. The second round of the mission was in the refugees’ camps in Burundi from 14 to 16 December 2006.  The two missions were aimed at persuading Burundian and Rwandan refugees based respectively in Rwanda and in Burundi to voluntarily return to their respective countries.

Key achievements:

•  Created a free atmosphere for Burundi MPs from different parties to chart a common agenda for the electoral code ahead of the discussions in parliament.

•  Parliamentarians reaffirmed the importance of holding elections after a long period of being in transitional government.

•  MPs were enlightened on key issues in electoral systems that should be prioritised to consolidate peace in Burundi.

•  MPs had a concessus on the modes of polling that they would advocate for while discussing the electoral code.

2. Training on Peace Building and conflict analysis: Years 2000, 2001, 2002 and January 2003:

The training sessions were organised under the theme "Peaceful Resolution of Conflicts"

Key achievements:

    * The training sessions created common understanding between MPs from different    political parties.
    *

    * Gained vital skills in conflict basic analysis. The skills were useful in enriching their debates on issues of peace and security in Burundi . They were also able to address their constituencies on the need to promote peace in their communes.
    *

    * The training sessions also helped strengthen the Chapter and improve is network with other civil society groups working in peace and security in Burundi.


3. Participation in AMANI Regional activities:

  •  Participated AMANI Regional Consultation on the AU/UN International Conference on the Great Lakes Region.

•  Participated in AMANI Regional Consultation on the DRC Transition

•  Participated in AMANI Strategy meeting to strengthen the role of women parliamentarians in addressing issues of peace and security.

•  Participated in all AMANI regional fact-finding missions and General Assembly meetings

•  AMANI Burundi is a member of the Burundi National Preparatory Committee of the International Conference on the Great Lakes Region.  The Chapter has been participating in national and regional activities related to the conference.

•  AMANI Burundi is a member of the Burundi National Preparatory Committee of the International Conference on the Great Lakes Region. The Chapter has been participating in national and regional activities related to the conference.

 

Key achievements:

•  Four Chapter members have been incorporated into Burundi National Preparatory committee of the UN/AU International Conference on the Great region.

•  AMANI recommendations on the Conference presented to the Burundi NPC on the Conference.

•  Burundi Members enlightened on their diplomatic roles in supporting the Transition in the DRC.

•  Women MPs more enlightened on their roles for Peace. Members were also appreciative of the need to link Parliament with Civil society organizations for information exchange.

4. Parliamentary Exchange Visit with AMANI Tanzania : September 2001

Between 22 and September 26, 2001, a delegation of five Tanzania members of AMANI Forum went on a mission to Burundi to interact with members of AMANI Forum Burundi.

The objective was to enhance understanding and solidarity between the two chapters as well as plan an action programme that would transmit this solidarity to their respective governments and communities.

This was after a spate of accusations and counter-accusations had flown between the two countries on suspicions harbouring of Burundian rebel bases by Tanzania.

Key achievements

•  MPs shared information on the need to lobby their governments to have joint military surveillance at the border to guard against infiltration by rebels.

•  Strengthened solidarity between parliamentarians from the two countries and reduced suspicions.
